Besides the Alfa AWUS036H, there are a myriad of USB cards out there that use the RTL8187L chip (there are at least a dozen to choose from on dealextreme.com alone for around $30, some of which look identically to the Alfa). I wonder if anybody here has ever compared the Alfa to some of these no-name cards in practice. Is the Alfa really worth the premium of ~ $15? Is it better in terms of distance, sensitivity and performance? Just wondering.
Cheers, Dan

The RTL8187L is just the chipset it has nothing to do with the features of the card. The Alfa AWUS036H is popular obviously because IT IS very powerful. I have many different chipsets that work fine with aircrack. The Alfa AWUS036H is the most powerful of all the cards I own, so evidently that is why your paying for the card, not because it has an RTL8187L chipset. The Alfa is popular precisely because it is a very powerful card AND because it has a compatible chipset. You can find dozens of cheap RTL8187L chipset based cards which work, but if it doesn't have the same features as the ALFA then that's why you're paying less.

Thanks Zermelo... but could you please be more specific? What features does the Alfa have that other cards don't? Also what do you mean by "powerful"? There are many no-name cards that have Tx/Rx power in the range of 500-600 mW. Cheers.

You have to compare the technical specification of the alfa and the other cards.

The Wifly-City cards seem to more than hold their own against the awus036h, especially the one with the green pcb.
Does any know how the Alfa awus050nh N v2 card perform with G networks? I understand its 'meant' for N networking but still, whats the verdict when it comes to G and how it compares with the rest of the 'high-power', 'high-gain' G adapters?
Alfa owners are welcome to share their opinion and benchmarks.
