How did you get those to work with Network Stumbler? When I try with the Alfa AWUS036H, and this is what I get.

I just ordered one.  From the research I've done their is about a 7% increase in range.  If you already have a 500mw I wouldn't worry about it but if you don't the 1000mw version is about the same price.  You can find them for as low as $30 shipped, or $40 shipped all day long.  I'm curious what kind of results I'll get with my cantenna.

Let me know if yours works with Network Stumbler. I had the same message "No wireless adapter found." with XP as well.

FWI, a double biquad antenna is supposed to be the best AFAIK.

Hi RobotCow,

you should use the Windows Zero Configuration tool instead of the Alfa or Realtek tool. I tried it with the realtek and Alfa tool and it didn't work with my AWUS036H (1.000mW) but with the Windows Zero Configuration (WZC) tool it works well.

Bye.

Here is a topic where you can find some more pictures and a Wirelessmonpro comparative test on video: Alfa Network Awus036h 500mW VS Awus036h 1000mW.

@ fnord0: for the 2000 mW, go and check the Wireless adapters testing section of Avenir-informatique.eu. They have very complete comparative tests of severals adapters and they will probably update it soon. Anyway, the new 036nh has much more Tx power with up to 2000 mW but less sensitivity than the 036h:
-Awus036h sensitivity -99dBm
-Awus036nh sensitivity -92dBm

Another useful thing to know is that it uses Ralink RT3070 chipset which is not very easy to use in monitor mode ( Anyone tried the 2000mw Alfa AWUS036NH ?? Ratlink 3070Wink

Hi M1ck3y,

- On Ubuntu Karmic (Kernel 2.6.30 or above) and Ubuntu Lucid the RT3070sta driver is already included.
- For Backtrack 4 final, i suggest you should install the new Kernel from Ubuntu Repositories, in order not to recompile manually.

Regarding the Alfa's coaxial RF connector, I've found a very interesting comment on Amazon by someone who really seems to know what he's talking about.

http://www.amazon.com/Network-AWUS036H-Wireless-802-11g-Adapter/product-reviews/B002LW3BM4/ref=cm_cr_pr_redirect?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0#R38CP8S6HU8WQW

Regarding the Alfa's coaxial RF connector:

I am not yet sure why the unlicensed (not requiring a license to transmit) Wi-Fi industry did so, but the RF connectors used on their equipment are non-standard and because of this won't fit together with normal coaxial connectors. The antenna connector on the Alfa, at a distance without viewing carefully enough looks just like a normal SMA RF connector but it isn't! That connector would normally be called a female connector which you would screw a male SMA connector on to but they made a change to the center pin, instead of a female center receptacle which a male pin slides into the manufacturers reverse it by making it a stub instead of a hole, or in other words there is a pin coming out of the center. Yes, it's reversed inside but the outside looks like a normal connector. I've wondered why they did this and I could research this more but my bet is that it was a regulatory action placed on them or something the industry decided to do to make it harder for people to find ways to illegally use the equipment by hooking up high gain antennas which have the same connector, but made for F.C.C. licensed point to point communication systems.

Is it true what he's saying about the SMA RF connector not being a standard connector??? As I intend to buy one AWUS036H, I'd really like to know if I'll be limited in using a cantenna with the Alfa  AWUS036H 1000mW.

Greets,
kukubau
