An interface has two states, up and down. Up means is is active, and can do operations. Down means it's inactive.

The fact it happens while running airodump-ng indicates there are processes interfering, network managers. They should be killed prior to putting the interface in monitor mode.

I run airodump-ng, then after  a short period of time it says wlan0 interface down. What does wlan0 interface down mean?
