Using GPSD with airodump-ng
« on: April 01, 2021, 03:05:26 pm »

Hi everybody !
We're french students working on drone tracking. We are also trying to use gpsd with airodump in order to get the gps address of the drone. However, we tried many times, but each time, the given coordinates are the gps probe address and NOT the drone address. We look for through various forums to find a solution, but we didn't find anything.
Have someone the same problem or any solution or ideas to fix that problem ?

(we're using kali 2021.1, aircrack-ng 1.5.2, gpsd 3.22)

thanks for your attention;

Hugo, Florian and Simon

The GPS device receives data from the satellite, and from there determine where it is located. That is, the location of the receiver.

As for the location of the drone, it is likely be in the data it transmits. You'll need to capture that data, likely decrypt it, and then analyze it to find how it is encoded.

Hi misterX, thanks for your answer.

Indeed that's what i thought, but I read on various websites that gpsd coupled to airodump-ng allows to easily catch  the GPS coordinates of the detected APs. For example : https://www.yeahhub.com/minimal-guide-sniffing-airodump-ng/    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi5ue6Tid_vAhVEh_0HHXnBBEcQFjAJegQIDhAD&url=https%3A%2F%2Fnathanvazblog.files.wordpress.com%2F2016%2F02%2Fmajor-project-final-submitted-version-2.pdf&usg=AOvVaw2jUR_3vrPVw30djvKn8OvC

Did I also wrongly understood the usage of gpsd and airodump ?

Thanks for your attention,
Simon

It doesn't give the exact location of the AP, it uses the location it has at the time of detection.

The location of the GPS receiver ? So I won't be able to catch the ap address ? The only way to do that would also be to catch data containing the gps coordinates ? That seems to be a new challenge

1. Yes, since it would be close-by to you, it would be your location.
2. Close-ish to the AP physical location since range is limited
3. Yes

After extensive testing of the gpsd feature in airomon-ng, my team has finally discovered a bug.
While gpsd daemon is running in background and less than 4 satellites is connected, the airomon-ng gpsd feature works perfectly without any issue. The moment more than four satellites is connected, it stops working and shows No fix.

Could you open a bug report? I'll also need the log files and the raw GPSd logs (JSON). If you're not comfortable putting that info in the bug report, you can email to the first email in the AUTHORS file.
